ON MAY 1ST WE GO ON STRIKE
For our interests and our perspective.
We are not paying for their wars and their crisis.
With its struggles, the working world wins its life and its future. We took to the streets en masse in recent times, defying the terror of the government and the media, against the policies that murder and rob us of our rights. We went on strike against those who try to convince us that the life we are promised is enough. We proved that our struggles can corner the government and the system.
This May 1st finds the people and the working class confronted with the ever-increasing attack of the system on every conquest and right. We are trying to survive on starvation wages, with prices soaring, with unrealistically high rents, at the same time as the system abolishes the 5-day-8-hour week, legalises 6-day and 13-hour work, and attacks our right to strike and union action, in health and education, persecutes and fires (for the first time since the dictatorship) teachers who fight alongside their students in public schools and with the recent law on the minimum wage it tries to condemn the people to permanent poverty.
While the government and capital for decades have been passing unpopular and anti-worker budgets with cuts in public spending and have been declaring categorically that there is no money for the life of the people, when the demands of the imperialists impose it, the money is there, always by bleeding the masses dry. They have turned the country into a vast US-NATO base and, while already giving up 3% of GDP to arms programmes, they have recently announced that with the new EU programme, “ReArm Europe-Readiness 2030”, so-called “defence” spending will increase dramatically in the next period. They are preparing us to become cannon fodder for their wars and demand that the people and the working class pay for the weapons and frigates.
To this generalised attack the sold-out union leaderships of the GSEE and ADEDY are neither willing nor able to respond. They have driven people away from the unions and made unionism repulsive to workers. At every opportunity they sell out the workers' struggles and support the employers and capital. They are the ones who, while 1 worker dies every 3 days on the job, put forward “dialogue” as the answer, thus giving a helping hand to the government and promoting “ labour peace”.
On the other hand, we cannot expect any answer from the reformists of PAME, who move in the constellation of parliamentarianism. The same constellation as the rest of the left, which obsessively wants governments to fall and everything to be nationalised, leaving the politics of the system intact and having illusions of more... bourgeois state.
For the system, the intensity of the attack on our rights is a one-way street
For us, however, there is another way
That of the organised struggle of people and youth, which can lead to a society of equality, justice and fraternity for the workers and peoples of this world. This perspective is not a utopia. It is the only answer to the rotting and exploiting system. It is the only answer to capital and imperialism that have brought humanity face to face with generalised war and nuclear annihilation.
The massification of the May 1st strike is a necessity! To build our own forces against the misery that they try to present to us as normality, to mass our unions and turn them into weapons in our hands. The collective struggle is the only direction that can win victories against the anti-people's-anti-worker policy! To resist the demolition of our conquests, to demand work and life with rights, for a society without exploitation!
